DIANA DEAN
    The Banquet Series (1994-2000)

"The Banquet Series is a sequence of large scale oil paintings depicting an allegorical betrothal. Measuring sixty-four feet in length, the series reflects the octave in structure, and features eight thematic scenes and two interval paintings. Artist Diana Dean is interested in the octave both as a musical and geometrical construct, and as an ancient idea governing the structure of events. In this imagining, all events fall into eight key moments, with difficulties arising between the third and fourth, and seventh and eighth moments. In The Banquet Series, Dean echoes this structure with eight horizontal scenes of the betrothal banquet and two vertical interval paintings. Viewed in sequence, the canvasses connect the visual space of the banquet hall as if in a musical movement."
